>> yes! >> persistence pays off. that's pretty good. we'll have more on that in a little while. meanwhile, a lot of people talking about the first lady last night at the inaugural ball in that stunning red gown. >> beautiful red gown getting rave reviews. the designer is jason wu. this is what they call a three-peat. he did the gown at the 2009 inaugural. he will join us live exclusively in a few moments. >> we'll have more highlights from that historical day, including how president obama is using his inaugural address as a call to action for a second term. also ahead, what do you think about co-workers who show up even though they are sick? >> i don't do it that often. >> it's actually a serious story. sometimes people don't have a choice. sometimes they aren't paid for their sick days, so they have to go to work or don't get paid. so we're talking about more efforts to make sick pay mandatory.

and rare interviews with prince harry in afghanistan that are getting a lot of attention. he talks rather candidly and openly about opening fire on the taliban. that much talked about trip to vegas and the duchess' pregnancy. we'll hear from the prince coming up. also, scary video as you've seen. the high school wrestler taking his position on the mat when a huge spotlight falls on him. fortunately, he is okay. actually, he finds humor in what happened. as you see, he turned out well. he's going to share his story in a live interview in just a little bit. >> all right. we'll get to that. let's talk about this arctic blast. it's cold for a lot of people in this country. >> we're looking at dangerous windchills and we're talking about a lot of lake-effect snow. this is cleveland, ohio. this is lake-effect snow. the great lakes are ice free today. and that's a big problem. that's going to set things up from lake superior, lake michigan, on erie, ontario. upper level low bringing that cold arctic air out of canada,

comes across the warmer waters of the lakes, picks up the moisture. so we have winter weather advisories, lake-effect snow watches and snow warnings from houghton to watertown, new york. the snowfall is going to be predigious. from ashtabula to syracuse, new york, over the next 72 hours, we could be looking at 4 feet of snow in the tughill plateau, syracuse, and erie on into buffalo, new york. we're talking about massive amounts of snow. the cold air will be unprecedented as well. we'll get into that in a moment. savannah? we go to washington where it is back to work for president obama after the celebration of his second inaugural. the first lady, as we mentioned, was shining at last night's ball in a ruby-colored gown designed by jason wu. nbc's white house correspondent peter alexander has the details this morning.

peter, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning to you. the formal ceremonies conclude a short time from now. there's a prayer service at the washington national cathedral. both the president and vice president will be there. president obama dives head first into his second term, there is just enough time to savor what was a very special night. >> my better half and my dance partner, michelle obama. >> reporter: the showstopper inauguration night had nothing to do with politics. the first lady, dazzling fans at the commander in chief ball in a striking red gown by jason wu, the same designer who fashioned that unforgettable dress for the first inaugural. dancing to al green's "let's stay together" performed by jennifer hudson, the obamas took a spin at both of the night's inaugural balls. now the president heads back to work, his second term beginning with a ceremonial oath of office. >> so help you god.

>> so help me god. >> congratulations. >> reporter: offered clues into his agenda, with an impassioned call for action. >> we are made for this moment and we will see that so long as we see this together -- >> reporter: the president promised a fight for immigration reform and gay rights. >> our journey is not complete until our gay brothers and sisters are treated like anyone else under the law. >> reporter: he pledged to tackle climate change and firmly defend entitlements like medicare and medicaid. >> they do not make us a nation of takers. they free us to take the risk that make this country great. >> reporter: as well as reiterating one of his immediate priorities, gun control. >> our journey is not complete until all our children, from the streets of detroit to the hills of appalachia to the quiet streets of newtown know they are cared for and always safe from

harm. >> reporter: historians say there's a unique opportunity. >> there's a magical moment in a second term. it's elusive and moves fast but when presidents get it right they often make history. >> reporter: before he headed back into the capitol on monday, the president paused for a moment. you could read his lips. i want to take a look one more time. i'm not going to see this again. that really was a striking moment yesterday afternoon. next month during the state of the union we'll hear more proposals. emboldened by a political victory, laying out what was a clear liberal agenda, but he faces real challenges in the near future as he goes up against congressional republicans on the issues of debt reduction and trying to pass a budget. savannah? >> a lot of work ahead. peter alexander at the white house this morning for us. peter, thank you. now here's matt. we're hearing more about the group behind that deadly crisis in algeria.

three americans were among the at least 37 hostages that were killed in a four-day standoff. janet shamlian has the latest. janet, good morning to you. >> reporter: matt, good morning to you. two of those three victims are from here in texas, all worked for bp at that natural gas facility. there is word of seven american survivors. today we're getting new details on how this all unfolded. in a first accounting of the hostage taking, the algerian prime minister said the islamist militants who attacked the facility included two canadians and a team of explosive experts who memorized the plant and were ready to blow it up. over four days, a grim toll. at least 29 militants are dead after algerian special forces waged a bloody counterattack. the number of hostages killed is higher, more than three dozen. among them, three americans who were working for bp, 58-year-old frederick buttaccio of texas,

victor lovelady of nederland, texas, gordon lee rowan of sumpter, oregon. a 57-year-old father of two who the police chief says was well known. >> i knew victor. i knew him to be a good family man. had a good family. his kids went to school here. well-respected people here. >> they're a good family, close family. they have a support of extended family, and i'm sure a certain number of good friends who will be able to be with them. >> reporter: among the seven u.s. hostages who survived, steven wysocki of colorado. and the manager of the plant. cobb texted a friend "i'm alive" and hid in an unused room until he was able to escape unharmed. bp won't comment on the workers, citing privacy concerns, but say executives are offering the families the company's full support. and there are ripple effects in this country, including

it is 7:26. good morning, everybody. i'm jon kelly. a normally quiet san jose neighborhood is on edge as police search for three men that broke into an elderly couple's home and tied them up last night. it happened at a home in the 6700 block of bret harte drive. they stole a number of items before driving away with two of the victims' cars. at some point either the husband or wife was able to break free to get to a neighbor's home to call for help. police say the couple is traumatized but they are holding up. investigators now looking for the couple's 1997 tan toyota camry and 2012 green toyota highlander. these are the license plates. for the camry it is 3ung960. for high lander 5xiu 520. if you have seen either of these cars, call san jose police

>> she is the woman manti te'o said for months he was in love with. >> my girl is a god fearing woman. >> it is bizarre and confusing relationship. >> what's your relationship with manti te'o? >> i've never met manti te'o in my life, never spoken with him. never exchanged words, tweets. >> manti te'o. >> during his run for the heisman trophy, te'o spoke openly of his girl. te'o says he was devastated back in september when he learned she died of leukemia, hours after his grandmother had also passed away, a story he shared with the nation for months. >> i'll never forget the time i found out that my girl passed a way. >> reporter: last week, the story broke. she never existed and te'o how says she was the victim of an elaborate hoax and now says he never met her and only communicated with her online and

on the phone. in her first television interview, diane says her identity was stolen and the other was created by this man. an aspiring singer, they went to the same high school and were facebook friends. >> the past five years, he's literally been stalking my facebook and stealing my photos. >> reporter: he hasn't returned repeated phone calls from nbc news and ducked the press, but on facebook his father writes it's my hope and prayer that we allow the truth to take its course, wherever that may lead. >> he has called and not only confessed but also apologized. i don't think there's anything you can say to me that would fix this. >> she says sthey were never

when you get the flu, doctors always say stay home and rest. what if you can't afford to? the severe flu season has increased the call to make paid sick leave mandatory. nbc's stephanie gosk has this story. steph, good morning to you. >> good morning, savannah. anyone who has the flu and showed up at work probably has heard it from co-workers, go home. but many aren't paid to stay home sick. and it makes a bad flu year even worse. emergency rooms are filled. workplaces are struggling. school desks are empty. and still it spreads. worrying about passing the flu on to her clients. the home health care provider fought through days of fever before seeing the doctor,

because taking a sick day means not getting paid. can you afford to take two days off work and not get a paycheck? >> not really. >> reporter: a painful choice for a single mother with a 7-year-old daughter. she is part of a large group of working americans, 40 million, who have jobs that do not pay them for sick days. >> all around the country right now, there are people who wake up sick and are asking themselves, if i stay home, will i have groceries this week? can i keep the lights on? and many are asking, can i keep my job? >> reporter: a lot of those people choose the job and fuel the epidemic. for hospital worker, the mantra is prevention. get the flu shot. if you get the flu, stay home. one out of every four of these patients has the flu. in cities like new york there is a push for mandatory paid sick leave.

legislation would require employers to pay for five sick days a year. san francisco, seattle, washington, d.c. and the state of connecticut already have similar laws. >> just wanted to call and see how you're feeling and if you knew when you would be back to work. >> reporter: this bus company pays its full-time employees for sick days but would have a hard time doing the same thing for part-time worker, who make up most of their workforce. >> as a small business it certainly does impact us. it seems everything has an additional cost lately. we certainly comply with whatever is required. >> reporter: it doesn't help worker workers like this woman. she doesn't get paid for a sick day in the emergency room. with cough and fever, she will be back on the job. it has been passed and then vetoed in philadelphia and new york. but a lot of places are giving it a second look. >> nancy snyderman is our chief

medical editor. >> good morning, savannah. >> this is a complicated issue. people think if you're sick, stay home. for a lot of folks, they aren't getting paid. that makes a huge difference for them. what can they do? >> a single working mom, or small business owner who says i'm pinched already, there's an economic understanding there. if you look at just preventive health, an aid worker taking care of a 90-year-old person or hospital worker puts more people at work, we're looking at preventive health and the economic squeeze. those two things really right now are at loggerheads. >> obviously if you go to work and you're sick, there's the potential you get one of your co-workers sick, too. >> pretty good potential, because the virus can stay on n inanimate objects for eight hours. you should get a mandatory flu shot. university of pennsylvania, everybody has to be immunized.

holding it, i actually heard the chains that were on the light like ratelle and next thing i knew, the light was on top of me. >> my first thought was how much does that thing weigh? did anybody estimate how much that lamp or light weighed? >> it weighs around like 100 pounds. >> 100 pounds. and yet you jumped up, right up and were able to walk away. were you in shock? >> i -- i don't know. it was quite the thing. i just never really imagined that it would have fell on me and it did. >> and the other thing i was wondering, michael, what about being burned by the lamps in there? did you get any burns? >> no, i didn't have any burns at all. >> you are lucky. how was the match going before that happened? >> well, it was like 30 seconds to a minute into the match, and the other kid took me down and we were on the edge of the mat. and i was thinking in my head,

an officer was doing an investigation on seminary avenue a few blocks from oakland coliseum and that's where three young men confronted him and shot him in the arm. the suspects then took off. the neighborhood was on lockdown overnight as officers looked for the shooters. police were able to catch one person but two others still remain on the run. they also found a gun on scene. they spent the night looking for more evidence and the injured officer right now remains hospitalized locally. he's expected to make a full recovery. we'll have more details on this coming up in our 11:00 a.m. newscast. right now let's take it outside and check things out. christina loren telling us one more day of that beautiful stuff. >> this is magnificent. good morning to you. a beautiful sunrise here. 7:56. sun has been up for half hour. our highs with that sunshine coming in so early are going to get close to 70 degrees in places like san jose. 67 for fremont. 65 in san francisco. rain on the way as of tomorrow.

would think that those kids would then have their kids do it. >> you would think, but apparently not. i would have been beheaded. but i'll tell you, there is -- so i'm thinking, well, what do we do to get to a place where everybody can be middle ground? where we can all be happy. maybe you start really young with the kids and you heap praise on them or you explain how good you're going to make somebody feel, nana is going to feel when she gets this note from you. maybe, i think, this is where we're really going. maybe a thank you phone call or thank you e-mail. >> at a minimum. second social quandary. someone wrote in my youngest child is three months old and cries much more thn my young two children did. she is often fussy when we return errands but it is not always possible to pick her up. still, some people offer advice about how to quiet her or try to

keep her quiet by cooing at her or putting her binky in her mouth. >> hear a baby crying, it hurts you a little bit. so i say to the mother, when people come up to you and offer you advice, just smile and say she's colicky. but then, unfortunately, i stepped in it and said if you're in a small space and the baby howling for more than a minute, maybe it's time for you to rethink your to-do list and pick the baby up if that's going to quiet her or maybe take them outside. >> so what was your reaction? >> whoa, whoa. the young mommies are no big fans of mine this week. they are saying, why are you so hateful and anti-baby? kids make noise. get used to it. >> i think you're right. >> see, this is why i love you folks. >> on the flip side did you get a different reaction from other

folks? >> yes. and, most, again -- it was a generational thing, mostly from people who already raised kids who say i would no more subject people to minutes of howling or why are these young parents feeling so entitled? >> you have a hard job, philip. that's what i take away from it. coming up, giada is cooking for cold winter days like this.

the teens ranging in age from 13 to 16 were shot last night around 6:00. near a home on bretton drive. they were standing on a sidewalk when three people drove by and opened fire. all four teens have serious injuries. they have not releaseded a motive or suspect descriptions. mike is checking the commute in san jose with a couple of problems. >> this is right here, 288 interchange here. the problem for 280 is a slowdown. 880, there is a crash. the map shows you coming up from highway 17 approaching that. there is that crash clearing to the shoulder and in north 280,

we're back now at 8:36 with a question. how many unread e-mails do you have in your inbox? the answer could say something about you and your personality. "today" national correspondent jenna wolfe is here to explain that. good news or bad news? >> it depends on how tidy you keep your inbox.

we'll find out in a second. when e-mail appears in that inbox, what do you do? do you let it sit there? maybe you're like me, incapable of letting it sit there, incapable of doing anything else until you open it. either way, what our inboxes look like says a lot about what our personalities look like, too. there it is, that newly bolded font, that parenthetical number, that sealed little envelope. to some an unread e-mail is no big deal. but for others like me, it must die. maybe i have a problem. or maybe it's just my personality. there is a correlation between the way your inbox is kept and the kind of person you are, am i correct? >> yes, there is a correlation. how you are in your inner life is a reflection of how you do things in your outer life. >> let's take a couple of examples. editor for the new yorker, details are her job. >> basically everything between the covers is my realm every week. and so i know every last detail

about every last piece. >> reporter: she also recently wrote about her quest to keep a completely pristine inbox. >> immediate visceral reaction like oh, my gosh, i want to know what it says and what i have to do about it. >> reporter: why wie kind of personality does this, according to the good doctor? >> might be a little more tight in the way they approach their life, so everything has to be in its place and the inbox, being a place. their closets are probably neat, their car is probably neat. >> it's so dorky to say but i've always loved cleaning my room. >> reporter: how about somebody who keeps a more robust e-mail count? >> somebody who is perhaps overextended, tends to be more expansive, doesn't focus on as much of the detail of life but has a bigger picture focus, they are focused more on the forest as opposed to the trees. >> some would say like our executive producer, john nash. a big picture guy who, when we barged into his office, had 167

unread e-mails. >> if i look over here, can i -- you have three of them just from me that are unread. >> you're actually in my junk file. >> how can you sit with yourself, knowing that you have unread e-mails that are piling up in your inbox? >> constantly feel guilt by it. my goal every night is to go to bed with having gone through all the e-mails of today. >> and how many days have you ever done that in your life? >> twice. >> reporter: e-mail etiquette is something else. there's always one splinter in the group. half of the question in the subject line, the other half in the body. >> i want you to open the e-mail. it gives you a little teaser in the subject line and finish the sentence in the e-mail. it seems to work. >> it does. i've opened every single one of your e-mails. could be worse like not writing in the subject at all.

dump it all in there with shallots. little garlic, shallots, honey, mustard, red wine vinegar, couple of tablespoons and a little bit of white wine. we're basically going to cook this down for a couple of minutes until it thickens slightly. you get sort of a sweet and tangy sauce. which i happen to love. you finish it with a little bit of thyme. and then just a tablespoon of butter. just a tablespoon. >> get over to my pepper. >> there you go. i will put that on. you go with peppers. >> why are peppers healthy? >> you said yuck to stuffed peppers. i took offense only because i know people grew up with stuffed peppers and these were gross, but these are better. >> not as exciting as pork. >> look at the colors of peppers. >> they're beautiful. >> you cut the top off. have you ever done this before? >> no. >> you cut the top off.

they were a few rows back. as the president approached, the crowd -- these were perfect strangers, began to pass her forward saying she ought to see this. and they put her right up on the front railing there. and she saw the president go by and she sort of made eye contact with him. she waited out there for 10 hours, gotten in a few naps. she was tired, she was hungry, but she got to see the president. it was a very moving moment. >> we love that bond in the crowd, people looking out, making sure you got that prime viewing. >> it's a patriotic day, no matter what your political perfect situation. the best of american traditions and things that we've been doing. it kind of cuts across the ages. >> so much history as you all were talking on the air. i feel like we all learned so much about democracy in our country. >> one thing we get to do, of course, we get a glimpse of the first children. we don't get to emalmalia and s all that often. i love when malia photo bombed her parents. sasha trying to take a picture,

i think and malia gets right in the way. it's a very sisterly thing to do. >> i love that. i love that. >> being along the parade route, because i couldn't see what was going on, i could just hear. one of my favorite moments was when you could hear beyonce sing "the star spangled banner," and i think everybody -- there was a hush over the crowd where we were. when she hit those notes, it gave me chills. just unbelievable. i never heard a more beautiful rendition of "the star spangled banner." >> an incredibly tough song to sing and in those conditions. >> producer joe michaels was talking to her. >> beyonce finished the song, she went back to jay-z and apparently she was coughing, and had a fit of the coughs and he gave her cough drops and so a photographer said i don't think she was feeling all that great yesterday. >> sounded beautiful. >> if only we could have days like that.

>> kelly clarkson was great, too. >> and james taylor, who we love -- spent time in the studio with you guys. he was so sweet. >> for me, again, the day being very special. i guess when president obama was sworn in, using the lincoln bible and dr. king's traveling bible. he said it was a privilege to be sworn in, using the bible and he actually -- the king family asked him to autograph it. he and chief justice roberts inscribed the bible at the request of the family. >> that's amazing. >> yeah. >> that was a beautiful moment there. and, obviously, great significance to president obama. not just that he was inaugurated for a second term, but doing it on that day meant a lot to him. meant a lot to people in the crowd. we move then into the evening portion. this is where the fashion really gets hot. first lady in red. you just talked to jason wu a couple of minutes ago. also designed the first lady's 2009 inaugural gown. did we like the gown? >> i loved it. red on her is her color. she looks stunning.

good morning. three suspects are now under arrest, accused of kidnapping a man from his home at gunpoint in the north bay. petaluma police say they spotted the victim on 6th street yesterday. they found the victim inside the car and a handgun and meth. the suspects are being held on $5 million bail. in hayward, investigators say four or five people managed to drive off with at least a dozen high-end cars from the world auto car dealership. so far, just one of those high luxury vehicles have been recovered. investigators say the cars taken are worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. after the break, we will take a look at the forecast and check those roads.

combination? >> a combination, but mostly it was really getting to know the woman that the role is actually inspired by. and especially during the first season, i got to spend a lot of time with her. and it was sort of learning about her energy. i wanted the show to be more about her spirit than it was about like wearing my hair and long nails and all of that, because she is very long island and incredibly gorgeous and really cool, but i wanted the spirit of her. so it was more researching her. >> before i let you go, i have to ask you about manti te'o, given that the character you play is a psychotherapist. there may be nfl teams asking people like you for advice in drafting him. >> well, i wish that manti had come to see me sooner. but i also think, as dr. dan da would, i'm sure -- i do believe he is the victim and in his gut somewhere along he knew

last night's presidential inauguration has the whole world buzzing about the first family, especially the women. what will the next four years be like for malia and sasha? from harper bazaar, kelly wallace. let's break down some of the fashions, avril, that we saw, starting off with this beautiful red gown from jason wu. second time she's worn jason wu at an inaugural ball. jason, we heard him earlier say, he was shocked that she chose once again to wear his design. does it shock the fashion world as much? >> it totally shocked the

fashion world. why should it shock us? it's a comfort zone. he dresses her beautifully. he has that key look that we all know and love, the white gown, hugely successful the first time around. and this great puff of color from last night. he was as surprised as everyone else. i think with her shocking choice of thom browne for the daytime look -- >> a men's wear designer that not a lot of people new. >> honestly he is very sort of insider in a way. i think that was a huge, huge hit. and the idea of accessorizing that with that little belt, which is her signature item. she loved the belt. >> from j. crew. >> a look that did not crease, looked fabulous all throughout the whole day, from the church service right to the very end. fabulous choices both times. >> what does it do for a designer like thom browne who perhaps didn't get as much attention before this, all of a sudden be on that fashion radar? >> it's very interesting. this, again, shows her

intellectual in choosing these designers. we never would have thought this was the case. an out fit that worked really well. it just had that mens wear tailoring touch. it will propel him. from a slightly edgier designer, in many ways. >> edgy bangs. it's going to be great. >> hairdo worked perfect. softer, face framing look for the jason wu gown. stunning look. >> you had to be impressed, be we all were, with sasha and malia as well, how beautiful they looked but also how well poised they were. >> everybody keeps talking about it, just how normal they seem. they looked so fabulous, right, of course? when we saw those moments where they were on their phone, taking pictures of mom and dad. we've been lucky. we've had a lot of opportunity to sit around and talk with mrs. obama. the thing that keeps coming away from those conversations is how normal. the kids have sleepovers, they go to the movies. she calls friends, really now, to say how are the girls?

are they the same? she so much wants to make sure that the white house bubble doesn't change them. by all accounts it doesn't seem as if it has. >> really great parenting. that's obvious as well. we see the girls on their iphones. that brings up the question of how they handle social media. this is something that kids of their age, 14 and 11, are certainly -- that is their new life. they're all about social media. do the obamas allow them to look and participate in facebook? >> no to facebook and no to twitter, purely really on a security issue, about being the white house children. but mrs. obama says they have conversations about it, that the girls are aware everybody has a cell phone, that they can't go off on someone and have a bratty moment. someone can take a picture of that and then that could define them forever. i thought that was amazing. they are acutely aware that they have this public image to uphold. that's pretty daunting, if you think about it, for a 14-year-old and an 11-year-old. >> we are talking about their style as well. they seem to also have their own sense of style, rocking j. crew

and kate spade. >> yeah. >> and how much more are we going to see these girls really mapping, of course, for young girls everywhere? >> i don't think either parent wants them to be the poster child for fashionista, short skirts, high heels. >> they're relatable because they're high heels not uber brand. >> at the end of the day imagine what it's like buying one prom dress for one teenage girl. can you imagine what it was like to dress two teens for the inauguration? they both looked exquisitely color blended, like no coats were fighting with the other. >> not matchy matchy. >> and malia was slightly more grown up, little bit of tween moment. just perfect, just right. she's blossoming into a really gorgeous-looking teenage girl. >> i think we're all just stunned to see what beautiful young ladies, and how quickly they've grown right before our very eyes. >> absolutely. >> kelly wallace and avril graham, thank you so much. great to have your perspective

fruit slices and put them in water. that doesn't taste -- or sports drink and juice. if it's too acidy, like orange juice, water it down. having this mix of fluids is really important. if you're feeling like a weakling and you can't drink, use this sports bottle and squirt it into your mouth. you may not feel like you need a lot of fluid but you do. >> what about cold versus warm? does a warm drink help? >> it's a personal preference. because there's no rules here. if the warmth makes your stuffy nose feel better, you can hold it up, it's a sense of comfort. the most important thing is to have caffeine free. >> why caffeine free? >> it's a diuretic, makes you go to the bathroom more. stick with caffeine free things. >> chicken soup can't hurt. what about chicken soup? >> chicken soup may actually help. let's see if it's true. took some chicken soup, gave it to sick people and markers in
